After having his #99 jersey number retired league-wide at the 2000 NHL All-Star Game, the Los Angeles Kings postponed their retirement ceremony of Wayne Douglas Gretzky jersey until 2002. On October 9, 2002 the Los Angeles Kings raised the #99 to the rafters inside of the Staples Center arena. Along with having his number retired, the team unveiled a life-sized statue of the "Great One" outside of Staples Center and had the current roster all wear the iconic #99 jersey before the game.
